Lady in the Water
Since we started our Lady in the Water review off-topic and never got it together, we decided to leave it and give you some written notes instead.
Michael:
I’ve got to say that I do love that Paul Giamatti’s character just came out and told people what the deal was with the Lady. Sure, they had no reason to believe him, but I think that because they did it added more to the fairy tale element of the movie, which I very much enjoyed. It really made the movie for me. What would have made it more, though, is if Freddy Rodríguez’s freakish “I’m only gonna work out one side of my body” character was in it more. He was boss. Oh, and it would have been better if Marky Mark was in it too.
Emily:
All of M. Night’s movies are fairy tales, but this is the first one to come right out and say it. I 30% like that about this movie, and I 70% hate it because he takes it too far. It’s an interesting mythology, but he can’t just let it speak for itself - as always, he’s spelling everything out for you. He tells you the basic construction of a story and how writers sneak in details and foreshadowing throughout. Congratulations M, you passed basic creative writing. I refuse to give you a medal.
It was semi-enjoyable because it was sweet and the characters were weird and quirky. But I still can’t call it “good,” because his damn cocky attitude pervades the whole film. Slap an Edwardian Script title at the end that says, “…and they lived happily ever after,” and it’s a Disney movie. (Irony.) I hate you.
